Over 300 Attend BEAM in the Park

2–3 minutes

More than 300 people gathered in Riverside Park, Ballymoney, last Sunday for BEAM in the Park, a community event dedicated to promoting mental health, wellbeing, and community connection.

The afternoon offered something for everyone, from live music and entertainment to family-friendly activities, all set against the tranquil backdrop of one of Ballymoney’s most beautiful green spaces. Local singer-songwriters Peter Brogan and Matt Calderwood entertained the crowd with acoustic sets, while laughter therapist Sabrina Hunter had guests in stitches with her interactive session. Children enjoyed stories and books in the storytime corner with Dessie Smyth, and the talented Charley Corbett kept little faces bright with colourful face-painting.

The Sport and Wellbeing Team from Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council brought energy and fun to the day, leading games and activities on the lawn, along with relaxing outdoor yoga tasters that were open to all ages. Volunteers from the Samaritans and the Community Rescue Service were also on hand to provide support and connect with attendees.

“It was incredible to see so many people out enjoying Riverside Park together. This is such a valuable community green space, and events like this show how important it is for our wellbeing to gather, connect, and simply spend time outdoors,” commented Lee Kane, a member of the group behind the event.

“Ballymoney is a community that cares about each other, and about each other’s wellbeing. And that was on full display in the park today,” he added.

Organised by BEAM (Building Empowerment and Awareness to Mind), the event followed on from May’s Dawn Walk, which saw over 250 people take to the streets of Ballymoney at sunrise to highlight mental health awareness. With BEAM in the Park, organisers wanted to create a more relaxed setting for families and individuals to come together and enjoy an afternoon of simple pleasures.

The event was made possible through the efforts of local volunteers, who gave their time, skills, and energy to ensure the day ran smoothly.

The BEAM organising group is made up of Hannah Graham, Katherine Murphy (Building Communities Resource Centre), Zara Hutchinson (Ballymoney Community Fridge), Clare Doherty (Community Rescue Service), and Ballymoney Councillor, Lee Kane.

“The day wouldn’t have been possible without the help of all the volunteers who worked so hard behind the scenes,” Katherine Murphy said. “From performers to activity leaders, from community organisations to those helping with set-up, we are so grateful for everyone who contributed to making BEAM in the Park such a success. And to everyone who came along to join in the fun of the day.”
